OpenOffice
OpenOffice is a productivity suite comparable to Microsoft Office. Based on the Open Document Format standard assembeled by the OASIS organization, it has begun widespread adoption among several governments and governmental agencies worldwide. Did you know it also allows you to create PDF files from the document as a basic printing option!

    • Audacity
    Audacity is a sound recording and editing software package. Better than windows sound recorder and free when compared to commercially sold editors. Audacity can support most formats available for audio editing today.

    • GIMP
    The GIMP is an Image Processing software package with capabilities similar to Adobe's Photoshop. With a $0 dollar price tag its definitely gaining popularity. GTK+ (Required for GIMP) 2.10.6 (Windows 2000/XP).

    • GTK+ is a graphical interface toolkit. It must be installed prior to installation of The GIMP. It is similar in was to Microsoft DirectX libraries required to run games.

    • Mozilla Firefox
    Why use internet explorer when you can use Mozilla Firefox. Already ahead of the game when compared to Microsoft, Firefox uses internet standards and has many anti-malware features and usability features that IE does not.
    Mozilla Thunderbird
    Thunderbird is a Microsoft Outlook like e-mail client. It does not have calendaring but it does keep better care of your mail. Individuals with experience around Eudora, and other clients may find this product useful.
    AVG Free Anti-Virus
    The AVG Free Anti-Virus software is available from Grisoft which produces a commercial version of the software as well. If you don't like the idea of paying mounds of money for a service you barely use, consider this as a minimal anti-virus option. They provide regular updates and downloads via the internet to maintain the virus definitions.
